Sustainable tourism is extremely important at Destination Seekers, and staying in eco-lodges is a great way to have an authentically sustainable holiday experience. Found all around the world, eco lodges facilitate environmentally friendly travel and offer tourists a unique experience.
Ecotourism as a concept, and eco-lodges themselves, have been around since the 1990s. Different to ‘green hotels’, which pledge to be more sustainable by washing towels less often and using energy saving bulbs, eco-lodges have low-flow toilets, use less plastic and single-use products, partner with more sustainable suppliers and try to be more eco-friendly within their business.
Typically, eco-lodges are located in jungles or other green area and are mostly nature focused. Common in countries like Costa Rica and Indonesia, eco-lodges must meet certain criteria:
- A dependence on the natural environment
- Having ecological sustainability
- A proven contribution to local conservation
- Provision of environmental training programs
- Incorporation of cultural considerations
- Provision of an economic return to the local community
Beyond these criteria, lodges will likely include food that is organically and locally grown, thus providing farmers in the area with jobs. They are properties that are trying to do their best by the local community and the planet. There are many amazing eco lodges around the world, and if you get a chance to stay in one on your adventure you won’t regret it!
