when to go to argentina

Argentina is a large country, and the weather varies a lot by region. Different areas are at their best in different months so it’s important to bear in mind that, depending on what you want to do, it may be the ideal time for one part of your itinerary, but less so for another. Below is some guidance which we can discuss with you to pinpoint the best time of year for what you want to do, or the best destinations for the time of year you want to go.

Summer

December to February.

This is high season in Patagonia, meaning that it is extremely busy and also prices are higher. The north can be very hot at this time of year. The Iguazu Falls see the highest rainfull during these months. Whilst this increased water volume will make the falls look incredible, be aware that some hikes may be closed.

Autumn

March to May

March brings autumn colours into the Lake District and it is grape-harvest in the wine regions. Temperatures in the north start coming down and rain eases off in Iguazu making it a better time than February for visiting here. The south starts to move into winter, and if you want to hike mountains avoid visiting here any later than March. If you venture the south in March there are fewer crowds and it is more peaceful.

Winter

June to August

In Iguazu Falls temperatures become much more pleasant, and in the north this is one of the best times to try to spot big cats – including the exquisite and illusive puma. This is mid-winter in Patagonia and some parts of southern Patagonia become inaccessible due to ice and snow. Northern Patagonia will likely be open, although very cold.

Spring

September to November

Southern Patagonia is still potentially inaccessible until late spring, so continue to avoid here until November. Rainfall in Iguazu starts to increase from October/November. Temperatures in the north increase steadily throughout spring, although don't discount this region if you enjoy the hot weather.

Overall the best time to visit Argentina is in Spring (October – mid-December) and Autumn (April to mid-June).

Be aware that depending on the desired regions, the seasons will influence the availability of accommodation, cultural events, and activities. At busy times prices will be higher and you will need to book well in advance to get the best accommodation.
