australia for families
Where to start? Australia is the epitome of a perfect family destination. Despite the large distances, travel is easy with a full airline network and excellent roads. If you choose to travel by road there are a plethora of interesting stops that you can take in on the way, whichever route you are taking, so you don’t have to sit in the car for too long in one stretch. From the world’s largest reef in Queensland to hidden gorges and waterfalls in Western Australia, fascinating and fun underground towns in South Australia to busy beaches in New South Wales, the list of excellent family destinations is endless.
Below are some highlights of this vast country, but it is by no means exhaustive:
The Grampians: located close to Melbourne, the sandstone ridges of the Grampians offer family-friendly adrenaline-inducing adventures alongside a fabulous food and wine scene. If your family loves wildlife you will see kangaroos, emus and deer roaming the charming historic towns in the area.
Sydney: a fantastic city for children and families, the beautiful coastal walks, fantastic museums, Aboriginal tours, and wildlife experiences available right in the heart of the city only scratch the surface on the experiences your family can have here.
Cairns: there is action and adventure to be had in the north of Queensland in Cairns and around. With a car your family can explore the whole region, including Daintree Rainforest where you can spot crocodiles, or the Great Barrier Reef where you can explore the spectacular underwater world.
Tasmania: given it’s compact size Tasmania is an excellent option for a family holiday. Head off in a campervan to hike and spot wildlife.
Rottnest Island: pick up bicycles on this secluded and beautiful island, just 25 minutes from Perth, and explore. Additionally, you can go in search of the cute quokka.
Kangaroo Island: stroll the beaches where sea lions snooze, or join a tour to swim with wild dolphins. Scramble over unique rock formations, glide down the sand dunes on a toboggan or sandboard, or visit a lavender or honey farm.
Australia Zoo: made famous by Steve Irwin, you and your family will have fun discovering native wildlife and learning all about them. From koala’s to wombats, kangaroos to crocodiles, you will have a fabulous day visiting here.
Kakadu National Park: vast, spectacular, and easily accessible, this is a gem for families who like the great outdoors. Admire rock art galleries up to 20,000 years old or take a Yellow Water sunset cruise to spot birds, buffalo and crocodiles.
