salt flats, bolivia
Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats in Bolivia, is one of the most spectacular places you will ever visit. The best way to experience this expansive region is on an organised tour where you will experience both history and culture, as well as delving into the fabulous scenery.

Most tours will start at the train cemetery located outside the town of Uyuni, where you will discover many old rusting and unused English steam trains. Next, you will have the privilege of visiting the local community of Colchani, where you can experience the mining of the salt flats, as well as touring a factory where they turn this into table salt.
The highlight of any trip into this region is, of course, the salt flats themselves. They are vast, flat and brilliant white. Watching the sun glistening off them is mesmerising. An absolute must when here is taking perspective photos, creating silly images of standing on your friends hands, sitting on a bottle of wine or whatever inspires you!
Other must-dos in the salar are Incahuasi, the largest island in the middle of the flats, covered in huge cacti. Take the short walk to the top of this island and be rewarded with exceptional views across the flats.
Although a one day tour is long enough to take you to the salt flats themselves, we highly recommend extending this to a multi-day tour and visit all that this unique area has to offer. From lunar-type scenery and strange rock formations, to high altitude lakes with hundreds of flamingos and the powerful geyers at Sol de Manana, you will not regret spending longer here. Finish your tour with a dip in the local hot pools and a visit to the stunning Laguna Verde, a beautiful lake in a dramatic setting overlooked by Volan Licancabur.
