At 3500m elevation, the Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on earth and an absolutely magnificent place to visit. The charming town of San Pedro de Atacama is a relaxed place to wander around, but more importantly it is a base for exploring the absolutely breath-taking scenery in the area, with endless views of mountains and desert in every direction. You can float in salt lakes, visit water holes, and take in the sunset over this other-worldly landscape. 

However the absolute highlight of visiting this area is heading deep into the desert and stargazing through massive telescopes. Sit out under the vast night sky and get a close look at star constellations, planets and even the moon. What you want to get out of your stargazing experience will determine when you go, for example if you want to view constellations you should avoid visiting during a full moon as it lights up the sky too much and makes it harder to clearly see the stars. However, this is an excellent time for getting a really detailed view of the moon itself. Whenever you go, and whatever you see, this is an incredible once in a lifetime experience which we can't recommend highly enough!
