A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito - the vibrant capital city - is definitely worth exploring. Set high in the Andes, the setting of the city is spectacular and there are a multitude of historical colonial buildings to marvel at. As the name suggests, Ecuador straddles the equator, and a fun trip whilst you’re in Quito is to travel to the north of the city and take pictures straddling the equator line.

From Quito there are a wealth of exciting options in the Andean region to enhance your holiday in Ecuador. The lively market town of Otavalo, north of the city, is in a fabulous position and you can get lost wandering around, perusing the bright colours of the native cloth and the distinctive headwear. You will also find the Avenue of Volcanoes in this region, the most visited part of the highlands and a must-see during any holiday to Ecuador. Amongst the spectacular views is Cotopaxi National Park, where one option is to climb to the top of the crater - crossing huge, deep crevasses and climbing on glaciers. Or if this isn’t for you there are various options for gentler walks which are just as spectacular. Absolutely one of the best things to do in this area is the Quilotoa Loop and seeing the awesome Quilotoa crater. This walk takes 2-5 days, passing through mountains, countryside and farmland.
Moving away from the Andes, your holiday to Ecuador could take you into the lush green of the Amazon Rainforest, this region takes up almost half of the mainland. A breath-taking tour into the heart of the Ecuadorian jungle is highly recommended. You can take guided walks to discover the abundant plant and animal life that call this part of the Amazon home, and on an overnight tour, you can wake up to the exotic sound of birdcalls and discover the thrill of sleeping in this secluded spot.

The inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution, the Galapagos Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean, seem somehow otherworldly. The incredible wildlife here lives both on land and underwater, so can be explored on foot and by boat. You can see iconic creatures like giant tortoises at the Charles Darwin Research Station on Santa Cruz Island or marine iguanas and blue-footed boobies on Española Island.
Island-hopping tours are a great way to explore the diverse landscapes here during your Ecuador Galapagos holiday. From the lava fields of Santiago Island to the lush highlands of Isabela Island, each stop offers something unique. Hiking is popular on islands like Bartolomé, where you can climb to the summit for panoramic views of Pinnacle Rock. And for beach lovers, Gardner Bay and Tortuga Bay boast soft white sands and calm waters, perfect for relaxation. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and panga rides offer peaceful ways to explore hidden coves and mangroves.
It's no wonder that this is a bucket list destination.
