when to go to brazil
As Brazil lies in the Southern Hemisphere summer is December to March and winter is June to September. Although there are regional weather variations, the summer is hot and sunny in large parts of the country, and generally considered to be the best time to go. However, Brazil is a year-round destination made up of several climatic extremes, none of which are severe enough to deter travel to any part of the country at any given time.
Summer (Dry Season)
Considered the best time to visit Brazil, the summer months from November to March are the warmest months across the country and also include the not-to-be-missed celebrations of New Year and Carnival. To come during this season, particularly during the festivals, you need to plan well in advance.
In December most of the northeast experiences similar hot and dry weather, and water levels in the Amazon are low. The mid-summer months of January to March combine the warmer days with rains in the Amazon and the Pantanal, which makes it a fantastic time to see wildlife. February in particular is a popular time for Brazilians to travel as Carnival often falls within this month.
Winter (Wet Season)
During the winter months of April to October, the world’s largest tropical wetland, the Pantanal, enters its driest period (starting at the end of April) and temperatures sit between 30°C and 35°C. It is not a good time therefore to visit this region as wetter months offer better wildlife spotting opportunities. If you decide to travel in winter, visit the Pantanal in August, September or October, which is also a great for spending time in Rio. June and July are excellent times to visit the Emerald Coast as evenings are cooler, but the air is fresh and the sea still warm. Bahia's rainy season tends to begin in June, but as with most tropical destinations, rain is in the form of one or two showers that arrive in the afternoon, which is also true for other areas during the wet season.
Other considerations
- High season in Brazil lasts from the week before Christmas until Carnaval. Flights and accommodation is more expensive during this period, and you will need to book well in advance.
- Other busy times of the year include Easter, and the months of July and August. The latter are probably the worst months to travel as prices go up significantly, and except for the north and parts of the northeast, the weather is unreliable, and cold from Rio de Janeiro southward.
- For good deals and weather visit Brazil in September or October. The spring weather means warm days in São Paulo, Iguazu, and Rio, and tropical heat everywhere else; in the Amazon and the Pantanal, you'll be there just before the wet season starts.
- The Amazon is sweltering year-round; the January to May floods just mean you’ll travel by canoe rather than on foot.
