Rio de Janeiro is one of the world’s most iconic cities, enjoying a unique location nestled between lush, green mountains on one side and crystal-clear seas on the other. Highlights include Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer statue), Sugarloaf Mountain, and the iconic beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Synonymous with Samba, you are never far from the sounds of this rhythmic beat. To get a feel for local life sit on Copacabana, sipping a refreshing drink and watch the world pass by, or visit during Carnival and experience the energy of this world-famous celebration.
The Amazon is phenomenal. The largest rainforest in the world, and home to the world’s largest river, the biodiversity here is utterly unparalleled, mesmerising and enthralling. Cruise down the river soaking up the views and wildlife that this exceptional jungle has to offer. Swim with pink dolphins, experience piranha fishing and get excited spotting caiman, crocodiles, howler monkeys and much more. Spend time in the quintessential Amazon city of Manaus, and follow the river into Colombia or Peru on a longer, multi-centre adventure.
Bordering Argentina and Brazil, and fed by the Iguazu River, the majesty of the Iguazu Falls cannot be overstated. With an average of 1,500 cubic metres per second rushing over the Paraná Plateau, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most dynamic and awe-inspiring sights in all of South America. Devil's Throat, a churning mass of water and spray, sticks hair to scalp and soaks clothes to skin. The force of this natural wonder is rendered vaguely terrifying and not much compares to the chance to peer into its depths. To make the most of your Iguazu experience, visitors should spend one day on each side of the fall’s as the Argentinian side offers its own unique perspective of this natural wonder.
Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland, and home to some truly exceptional biodiversity. Despite being less famous than the neighbouring Amazon, this is the best place to spot wild animals in the whole of South America, with thrilling wildlife such as caiman, howler monkeys, giant otters, anacondas, and the elusive jaguar to be discovered. This is a veritable paradise for nature lovers.
The area around Rio de Janeiro, the Emerald Coast hosts exotic jungle-fringed beaches, and pretty historic towns and villages, situated on tranquil bays peppered with tiny islands. The jewel in the crown is the beautiful Paraty. This historic town has everything you could want in a colonial South American town, including cobbled streets, beautiful buildings and an eclectic mix of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. If you venture a little further, the surrounding bay offers nearly 300 islands, which provide visitors with exceptional beaches and great snorkelling spots. One of these is Ilha Grande, a peaceful vehicle-free, forest-cloaked island.
