Oman Complete – Self Drive
Day 1: Muscat
Arrive in Muscat and spend the rest of the day exploring the city. Recommendations include taking in a souk, wandering along the narrow pedestrianised streets packed with gold, antiques, colourful textiles and spices, and the Grand Mosque.
Your car will be delivered to you for the self-drive part of the tour.
Day 2: Ras Al Hadd
Your first stop today is Sur. This is an attractive seaside town that is famous for its many shipyards that still make traditional Omani sailing boats called Dhows. You will have time to explore the town before continuing towards Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve. The beach here is renowned as a place where the endangered green turtle comes ashore to lay eggs. We recommend visiting the reserve during the evening/night, and also at dawn when you will be able to watch as these huge creatures come ashore and lay their eggs in holes that they dig in the beach.
Day 3 to 4: Wahiba Sands
Your day will start with a free morning to enjoy the local beach. Later you will drive to the edge of the desert known as Wahiba Sands and continue into the desert itself by 4WD jeeps. The Wahiba Sands are a huge sea of immense sand-dunes that reach more than 100m high and are constantly shifting with the winds. You will make your way to a small desert camp where you will spend the night in traditional goat hair Bedouin tents. You can sit around a campfire with nothing above you but a blanket of stars.
Rise early to climb one of the dunes that soar above the camp for sunrise over the desert. Options for later include taking a short drive to Wadi Bani Khalid, a lush valley where you can follow the trail up the wadi (canyon) to several beautiful deep emerald pools where you can swim.
Day 5 to 6: Jebel Shams
Today you will head high into the mountains to Jebel Shams. Known as Oman’s Grand Canyon, the scenery in this area is stunning. The huge canyon stretches for miles through a dramatic and barren landscape. You will travel via Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman’s interior region and also visit the impressive Jabrin Fort, in a stunning location in the heart of the date palms. If you are travelling with children they will love exploring the labyrinth of corridors and courtyards inside the fort. Another place to visit if you have time is Nizwa fort.
You have a full free day in the mountains. One recommendation would be to visit Jebel al Akhtar, known as Green Mountain. This is in the heart of the Al Hajar mountain range, a magnificent landscape of rugged and untouched beauty. You can spend the day exploring and taking a hike through the juniper groves and olive orchards. There is a lovely deserted village in Wadi Ban Habib that makes for a good base from which to explore.
Day 7 to 10: Beach
You will have time to relax this morning before driving to Muscat for three nights at a beach resort.
Your rental car will be collected from the hotel.
Day 10: Flight Home
Transfer to the airport for your flight home
