The first place on your visit will be Muscat. The hustle and bustle of the markets and the local smells are intoxicating, and it is highly recommend that you spent at least a day here to take in the sights of the capital. The resorts in Muscat and the surrounding area also offer exemplary service and accommodation to start or end your holiday in relaxing style.

The true adventure of this country begins as you leave the capital. Whether you self-drive or have a guide, the road is a great way to get a feel for the country. The top activity often cited for Oman is turtle watching. This is an unforgettable experience for both adults and children and is not to be missed. Ras Al Jinz Reserve offers both night and early morning tours to see these beautiful creatures and we recommend making time to do both. Whether you are watching a mother pull themselves up the beach to lay her eggs in the sand, or babies hatching to make their way into the surf for the very first time, you will not regret taking the time to engage in more than one viewing.

Oman has plenty of desert to explore, and visiting Wahiba Sands to stay in one of the desert camps is a magical experience. Choose your style of tent, eat fabulous buffet food and look up at the impressive night sky, and you will want to stay longer. There are many activities that you can book, such as dune surfing, camel riding or a private breakfast on a remote dune. Or you may merely want to wander up to the top of the closest dune to take in endless views of this sea of peaks. The most exhilarating experience though is driving your own 4x4 in and out of the desert, surfing and cresting the dune waves.

If mountain views are your passion you are well catered for in Oman. Jebel Shams, the highest peak at 3000m, offers incredible views and cooler weather. There are excellent opportunities to visit local towns and to go hiking. Alternatively Jebel Samhan is popular with tourists, and is beautiful during the monsoon season when the area is covered in greenery.
