Sri Lanka’s sprawling capital of Colombo is a city of contrast. Peaceful Buddhist temples and colonial churches lie amid dilapidated streets and developing commercial districts. Whether it’s lively markets or elegant boutiques, there are ample shopping opportunities available, and you can take a relaxing stroll along Galle Face Green on the city’s waterfront. There is also a growing food scene, with an increasing number of excellent restaurants and trendy bars to choose from. Kandy is Sri Lanka’s second largest city and possesses a scenic setting around a lake. The city is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, said to house Buddha’s tooth. Kandy is famous for its outstanding beauty with the surrounds offering visitors forested hills, cascading waterfalls, stunning views and an impressive array of flora and fauna.
Sri Lanka hosts incredible national parks for you to discover and explore. From 400 species of birds to majestic elephants, as well as sloth bears, sambar deer, wild buffalo and the elusive leopard, it truly is paradise for wildlife lovers. Udawalawe National Park is renowned as one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants. As is the wonderful Minneriya National Park, and either is sure to be a highlight of any holiday to Sri Lanka. Yala National Park is one of the largest in the country and offers a terrain of dry woodland and grassy plains which supports an abundance of wildlife. Another adventure is to hike to the World’s End escarpment in Horton Plains National Park.
Sri Lanka’s glistening coastline provides exceptional sandy beaches in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Your beach stay could be combined with a visit to the historic Dutch fortress old town of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Set on a promontory on the southwest tip of the island, Galle offers the best-preserved example of a European built fortified city in Asia.
Additional experiences for visitors include the central plains, often referred to as the ‘Cultural Triangle’, which offers visitors four UNESCO World Heritage sites: the remarkable rock fortress of Sigiriya, the extraordinary cave temples at Dambulla’s and the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. South of the plains, the tea country in the beautiful highlands boasts misty jungle-clad mountains and mile upon mile of emerald-green rolling tea plantations. This sits alongside 19th Century planters’ bungalows and tumbling waterfalls.
