Granada sits on the shores of the magnificent Lake Nicaragua in the shadow of the imposing Mombacho volcano. It is the most visited city in Nicaragua, and a must do on any trip to the country due to its wonderful colonial and neoclassical architecture, colourful cobbled streets and laid-back vibe. Take in the essence of the city listening to traditional music or watching locals at their day-to-day work. Another colonial city, Leon is the intellectual capital of Nicaragua. This pastel-hued city boasts art museums, historic landmarks and cultural events for you to enjoy.
Ometepe Island rises impressively out of Lake Nicaragua and consists of two magnificent volcanic cones. The island, which can be reached by boat, is made up of expansive forests where you can find monkeys, armadillos and deer. As well as the natural wonders, remnants of the ancient Aztec civilisation can be seen in petroglyphs. For the adventurous, it is possible to climb Maderas Volcano. Or you can explore the area on foot for a more relaxed visit.
Sitting on the Pacific Coast, the friendly fishing town of San Juan del Sur is one of Nicaragua's main tourist destinations, whilst maintaining its sleepy village feel. Set in a crescent-shaped bay lined by rocky headlands covered in forest, the main activity here is fishing. Outside of town there are a dozen or more glorious, pristine beaches, where you can enjoy views of the crashing Pacific from a Tiki bar or luxury hotel. In fact El Coco, Chacocente, El Astillero and La Flor are some of the most picturesque beaches in Central America. For the more adventurous, the English-speaking Caribbean Corn Islands offer glistening beaches and magnificent diving opportunities.
To experience the fantastic landscape Nicaragua has to offer, head to Masaya Volcano National Park located between Managua and Granada. Top of the list here is the huge Santiago Crater, where you can hear the lava thundering past below ground. For cultural experiences, you will discover fascinating little market and craft towns surrounding the national park.
There is a wealth of exploring to be had in Nicaragua and our Adventure Designers would love to help you discover all the country has to offer.
