The next day is very exciting as you will be embarking on a tour of the wonderful archaeological site of Teotihuacan, located 50km north east of Mexico City. You will find the two large pyramids - Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon - and it was once a very significant city. Enjoy spectacular views from the top of the pyramids. You will have free time in the afternoon.
Day 3: Puebla
Today you will journey to Cholula Puebla; a city that is very traditional but is also on the verge of modernity, with the lively youth keeping the town alive.
Day 4 to 5: Oaxaca
In the morning you will take a guided tour of the relaxed city of Puebla, visiting the main square located in the downtown area, the Cathedral and Santo Domingo church. The city is well known for its painted ceramic tiles that adorn the buildings. Your day ends in the creative and artistic city of Oaxaca, where you can sample its own version of Mexican cuisine.
Today you will take a guided tour of Oaxaca, which is full of museums and charming markets. In the afternoon you will have your own leisure time to walk around the city centre.
Day 6 to 7: San Cristobal de las Casas
Your next stop is Chiapa de Corzo where you will be able to enjoy a guided tour of the Sumidero Canyon. Surrounded by a stunning national park and placid, glittering lakes, the canyon is one of the most popular destinations in the area. The best way to experience it is by boat, travelling right through it. You will also take in the charm of the colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo, a fine example of Spanish Mudéjar or Moorish-influenced architecture. In the afternoon, you will transfer to the high altitude town of San Cristobal de las Casas, the capital of Los Altos.
First thing this morning you will tour the colonial town of San Cristobal de las Casas, followed by a day visiting the local villages and Maya communities. This includes Santo Domingo, Zinacantán and San Juan Chamula.
Day 8: Palenque
In the morning you will visit the spectacular Agua Azul falls, an extraordinary area in the mountains between Palenque and Ocosingo. There are several water pools, some of which you can swim in, and they are surrounded by thick jungle. After the tour you will head to Palenque.
Day 9: Campeche
For history lovers, today is a highlight of your tour as you will be visiting the famous archaeological site of Palenque, rising out of the Chiapas rainforest. It is an exceptionally impressive example of Maya architecture, and the surrounding jungle makes it highly atmospheric too. It has more glyph inscriptions than any other Maya city.
Once you have taken in all that Palenque has to offer, you will carry on to the colonial town of Campeche.
Day 10: Merida
Enjoy a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Campeche this morning, followed by the fascinating archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah. You will be able to explore these once-forgotten Mayan ruins that were swallowed by the jungle, and which are now one of the area's greatest attractions. The day will end with your arrival in the beautiful town of Mérida.
Day 11: Playa del Carmen
The absolute jewel in the crown of this trip, you will be transferred to see one of Mexico's most fascinating sites in the world today; Chichen Itza. Here you will see the peak of Maya architecture. In this UNESCO World Heritage site the largest pyramid is 24 meters high, with four 91 step staircases leading to the top, and it is intensely dramatic.
