Generally, the best time to visit Guatemala is from November to April, during the dry season, when the temperatures are warm and pleasant. That being said, Guatemala has a pleasant climate and is excellent all year round. Even in the wet season from May to October, the rainfall is typically only for a couple of hours a day, except in September and October when it might be a little more disruptive.

Dry Season

November-April

Guatemala’s dry season offers travellers shining warm sunshine and beautiful blue skies in lower regions such as Antigua and Lake Atitlán. The highlands are similar during the day, but can get a little chilly in the evenings due to the altitude. In the jungle around Tikal you will experience short showers, but this has no impact on touring here.

Wet Season

May to October

As with many tropical destinations, the wet season in Guatemala offers sunny mornings with showers falling predominantly in the afternoon, usually lasting no longer than a couple of hours. There will be increased humidity in the lowland areas around Tikal, and travel here can be compromised due to the impact of heavy rain on the roads.

Other considerations

In addition to weather; crowds and pricing can be important considerations when deciding when to travel. In the high season (the dry season) you will encounter bigger crowds and higher prices. Additionally, accommodation will book up further in advance, in particular over Christmas and New Year, so early planning is crucial. In the wetter months of May, June, September and October, prices may be half that of the peak period.
