2 Weeks in Belize

Day 1 to 2: Belize City

Arrive in Belize City. Take a tour, including the Old Town, the shops in the new town, the Tourist Village (built to entice in cruise ships) and Belize City Zoo.

Day 3 to 4: Caye Caulker

Today you will take a boat to the spectacular Caye Caulker. There are no cars here and it is a chilled island to wander around and take in the feeling of island life.

There are many options open to you on Caye Caulker. You can dive in the Blue Hole or go diving in elsewhere in the magical reefs surrounding the caye, explore the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve or try paddle boarding/wind surfing/kayaking.

Day 5 to 6: Ambergris Caye

The next island you are heading to is Ambergris Caye. A highlight here is the Ho Chal Marine Reserve. In addition to this, you can spend your time here relaxing, shopping, going kitesurfing, pampering yourself and cycling around the island.

Day 7 to 8: Placencia

Today you travel to Placencia, first by boat back to Belize City, and then by road to Placencia which is 143 miles away.

From Placencia take time to visit Cockscomb Wildlife Reserve, globally recognised as the world’s first jaguar reserve. In addition to these fascinating big cats, you’ll find cascading waterfalls, panoramic mountain views, nature trails, and a plethora of other exceptional wildlife. Another option is to climb one of Belize’s highest points, Victoria Peak.

Day 9 to 10: Dangriga

At your next stop of Dangriga, you can take a tour around the Marie Sharp hot sauce factory, an interesting and unique experience. The Garifuna culture is alive in Dangriga, and you should visit the Gulisi Garifuna Museum to find out more about the history of the Garifuna people.

Day 11 to 13: San Ignacio

Your next stop of San Ignacio offers lots of exciting outdoor activities. These include visiting caves and waterfalls, horse-riding, canoeing the Macal River, and learning about history at the local Mayan sites or about the local wildlife at Green Iguana Conservation Project. The next day you can relax or take part in an additional add on.

*Optional add on 1: Day trip to Tikal - From San Ignacio it is possible to take a trip to Tikal, Guatemala. This is one of the most important Mayan sites in the world, and the splendour of this jungle city cannot be overstated. The forest itself is superb for wildlife spotting; it's possible to spot hummingbirds flycatchers and honeycreepers, all to the chorus of Howler Monkeys roaring in the distance.  We highly recommend adding this on to your itinerary.

*Optional add on 2: If you don’t want to travel as far as Tikal you can visit the archaeological site of Cahal Pech, or visit the Belize botanical gardens and jungle lodge where you can tour the gardens, and then paddle back to San Ignacio along the Macal River, rich in birdlife, butterflies and iguanas.

Day 14: Belize City and home

Today you will travel back to Belize City in time for your flight home.

Belize Wildlife Adventure

Day 1: Belize City

Arrive in Belize City, a typical Caribbean town where parts are still largely built of wood and galvanised iron, with many of the original colonial style houses in an elegant state of disrepair. Take free time to explore the city.

Day 2 to 3: Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary

After some more free time in Belize City, you will journey to the Community Baboon Sanctuary, where you have a chance of up-close encounters with the world's second loudest land mammal - the Yucatecan black howler monkeys. Later in the afternoon travel inland to the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, an important wetland habitat, where you will spend the next two day. In the afternoon take kayaks out for an encounter with Belize’s fabulous wildlife. At sunset go in search of Green Iguanas and numerous wetland species including several species of kingfisher, heron, waders and raptors.

Wake early in the morning to explore the lagoon, where birdwatchers will be in paradise - over 250 resident and migratory bird species have been spotted in the park. Following this you will take a boat trip to the ancient Mayan site of Lamanai, 2000 years old and hidden deep in the jungle. On the journey you may spot freshwater crocodiles lurking along the river bank.

Day 4 to 6: San Ignacio

Before you leave this morning, take a short excursion on foot to explore Crooked Tree further. Then you leave to take a bus to San Ignacio, a traditional Belizean town. Straddling the Macal River, it is a centre for visiting ancient Mayan sites. In the afternoon you will visit a Green Iguana breeding programme, which is dedicated to re-releasing these magnificent reptiles back into their native habitat. After this you can spend the afternoon relaxing.

The following day you will visit the Mayan site of Xunantunich, located across the Macal River. The main plaza houses the awesome El Castillo, a 40 metre high pyramid, which offers spectacular views over the forest. In the afternoon you will travel to Barton Creek for canoeing in a cave system, offering striking cave formations.

Day 7 to 8: Tobacco Caye

On the way to today’s final destination of Tobacco Caye, you will stop at the Blue Hole National Park, operated and run by the Belize Audobon conservation society. Here you can visit a large cave complex and swim in a crystal clear limestone sink hole surrounded by lush jungle. Ten miles off the coast, your tropical final destination is just a 20 minute boat ride from Dangriga Town. Tobacco Caye is one of the smallest islands in Belize, and as such has an intimate, relaxed feel with a host of activities to choose from.

Whilst you are here you will have a free day to relax and soak up the Caribbean sun, however if you would like to do something more active there are some optional trips, including visiting the small coral cayes, a trip to Bird Island, a renowned local bird sanctuary benefitting from excellent snorkelling opportunities in this World Heritage site of the Belize barrier reef system, embarking on a fishing tour, as well as manatee watching and touring nearby islands.

Day 9: Jungle

After another free morning on the laid back Tobacco Caye, you will head back to the mainland and take a short drive into the Maya Mountains and the extraordinary jungle scenery. You will stay in a biology field station for Tropical Research, where you will get a hands on experience of data collection and observations. Bat's make up Belize's most diverse mammal group with more than 40 different species.

Today’s highlight will either be a full day trip deep into the jungle to visit Davis falls, Belize's second highest waterfall or a more sedate visit to Billy Barquedir National Park, home to the Billy Barquedir waterfall. Whichever option you choose you will not be disappointed in the diversity of the wildlife and the surroundings.

Day 11 to 13: Caye Caulker

Today you will journey through turquoise waters to your final destination, Caye Caulker. Take time to relax on the island, whilst also enjoyed some of the excellent optional trips. For example, take a snorkelling trip out to the nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark and Ray Alley, or take a full day trip out to Swallow Caye to observe the manatees in their natural mangrove habitat. You can also find world class scuba diving sites, such as the Blue Hole. There are also excellent swimming and snorkelling opportunities straight from the beach, or you can take out a sea kayak to explore mangrove forests rich with birdlife. Whatever you do don’t miss out on the enchanting views from this veritable paradise.

Day 14: Journey home

Today you will travel back to Belize City in time for your flight home.
