Ambergris Caye: sitting on the second largest reef in the world, this is a fabulous destination for underwater lovers. Be mesmerised by the incredible marine life a short distance offshore.
Mayan ruins: Belize is home to some fabulous Mayan sites. Although not on the grand scale of other Central American sites such as Chichen Itza or Tikal, they are still mesmerising to visit. Set in the jungle they are very atmospheric, and children of all ages will be in awe when they first see them. Top sites include Caracolm and the easily accessible Cahal Pech. If you don’t mind a bit of travel, and particularly with older children, a great option is to cross into Guatemala to see Tikal. Not only does this give the whole family the chance to see the most impressive pyramids in the region, but also means you can tick Guatemala off your list – if only a little bit!
Placencia: with a perfect kid-friendly coastline of long, narrow beaches, shallow water and gentle waves, this laid-back fishing village is a great place for families to visit. Located on Belize’s southern tip, easy access to the reef makes it a perfect place to take your children snorkelling with safe access to the beach.
Chocolate: the ancient Mayans were the first to discover chocolate, and there are a number of places in Belize where you can learn the history of chocolate and, what children will love the most, make your own!
