Belize is an anomaly in Central America, and in some ways feels much more like a Caribbean country - it's English-speaking and offers a blend of cultures and races that includes Maya, Mestizo, African, European, and Asian. However, it has plenty of distinctively Central American features as well. One of these is the incredible Mayan ruins that can be discovered here. The largest of these is Caracol. Whilst Caracol is one of the most challenging sites to reach, the trip there is also one of the most scenic. It is the largest known Mayan centre within the country and has a history of conflict with Tikal, Guatemala.
The Belize Barrier Reef is a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of Belize. It is a 300-kilometre-long section of the 900-kilometre-long Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is continuous from the Yucatan Peninsula to Honduras making it one of the largest coral reef systems in the world. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the top tourist destination in Belize, attracting thousands of scuba divers and snorkellers each year, all wanting to get a glimpse of the abundance of corals and tropical fish on offer.
As well as its incredible reef, the Belize Caribbean is home to the famous cayes, perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, and ziplining. The cuisine here is also fantastic, with an exceptional combination of Latin America, Caribbean, and Kriol cuisine. Caye Caulker is a relaxing paradise destination with reggae bars and fresh seafood.
Away from the sparkling Caribbean Sea, approximately 40% of Belize's land is classified as protected. The jungle supports a wide variety of wildlife including five cat species – margay, jaguarundi, ocelot, puma and jaguar. There is also abundant bird life, monkeys and iguanas. This haven offer an incredible world to discover.
On a Belize adventure, you'll discover astonishing marine life, abundant jungle vegetation, ancient Mayan ruins, and above all, friendly and easy-going people. Destination Seekers are here to help you plan your perfect Belize adventure.
