Ho Chi Minh City is a fabulous introduction to the country’s history, embodying the elements of Vietnam’s turbulent past. Once you have worked out the busy road junctions, dodging between the seemingly hundreds of motorbikes, you will have a wonderful time exploring all this city has to offer. From Ho Chi Minh consider a tour to the Mekong Delta, known as Vietnam’s ‘rice bowl’ due to amount of rice produced in the region. A fantastic way to get a feel for the Mekong is by boat along the Mekong River. As well as short tours within Vietnam, these cruises can take you from Ho Chi Minh to Siem Reap in Cambodia. From the boat you will get a feel for the lives of those who live and work on the banks of the Mekong.

Journeying north to the Central Highlands you will encounter lush scenery, waterfalls and adventure sports. You will also find it a welcome respite from the heat of Ho Chi Minh and the Mekong. The main city of Da Lat offers visitors a real feel for local life, including trips to nearby plantations where flowers, rice, vegetables and coffee are produced.

The central coastal region includes the towns of Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. Da Nang is ever-changing with new hotels appearing and nice beaches to relax on. However Hoi An and Hue will captivate you with their beauty. The ancient port town of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it’s not hard to see why. Despite the ravages of the Vietnam War it is impressively well preserved and you could spend days getting lost wandering the ancient streets. Whilst here head to a local tailor for a made to measure garment, which the town is famed for. From Hoi An we highly recommend a day trip to the Hindu ruins at My Son, originally the capital of the Champa Kingdom. Sadly many of the temples were destroyed during the Vietnam War, however enough is still intact to get a feel of the size and beauty of the complex. Beautifully situated on the shores of the Perfume River, and former capital of Vietnam, Hue is worth a few days to explore its unique atmosphere and cuisine. Of particular interest is the ancient citadel, which provides clues to the magnificent imperial city that once stood here. Highlights in the northern regions include the capital Hanoi, the vivid landscapes around Sapa and the spellbinding limestone mountains of Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Hanoi feels like a European city in the heart of Asia, with the charm of a bygone era. Stroll along lakes and tree lined streets, and refresh in a street cafe. Beyond the city, there is nothing quite like the view of terraced rice fields as far as the eye can see, or the feeling of balancing whilst walking around the edge of them. Sapa is a charming hill town and the perfect base to trek amongst the hilltribes of this area. Images of Halong Bay are iconic and feel otherworldly due to the huge rainforest-topped mountains rising majestically out of the South China Sea. You can experience the wonder of this scenery on day trips from Cat Ba Island, or longer overnight cruises. Cruises will offer options for closer exploration, including kayaking and cave tours.
