when to go to Malaysia
Perched just above the equator, Malaysia boasts a tropical climate with hot and humid weather pretty much all year round. However, the climate can differ from coast to coast, meaning that some places are best visited at certain times of the year.
Inland Malaysia
You can visit Malaysia’s mainland, such as tea plantations to kampung villages at any time of the year.
To avoid higher prices, it’s best to avoid Chinese New Year and the peak months of July and August.
East Coast Malaysia
You will find beautiful beaches and fantastic diving spots on the ast coast of the country. If you want to add tropical relaxation to your bespoke itinerary, then the best time to visit is between March and October.
During the wet season, heavy rains and storms pass across the east coast, causing many of the island resorts to close and boats will not sail to the island due to rough seas.
West Coast Malaysia
You are able to visit the west coast any time of year. There isn’t a specific wet season in the west, but you can expect wet weather from May to November. Having said that, the rainfall isn’t heavy enough to prevent visiting this area.
Malaysia by Month
Spring
March to May
This is one of the most pleasant times of the year to visit Malaysia. The east coast has generally dried up by March and the west doesn’t get wet until late May. It’s also quieter at this time compared to the summer months.
Summer
June to August
Summer is hot and humid in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur and Penang are drier at this time of year than they are in the autumn or spring. Note that this is one of the busiest seasons for travel so you need to plan well in advance.
Autumn
From September to November
The wet season appears in the west during this season. Penang and Langkawi are at their wettest during these months, in particular September and October. By November the east coast is also hit with rains. Temperatures remain hot given the tropical climate.
Winter
From December to February
Winter is not one of the best times to visit Malaysia as the weather on the east coast beaches is worse this time of year, including high winds. The west coast weather isn’t as bad.
