when to go to laos
Laos has a tropical climate, with the wet season from May to October when it’s hot and wet (with August being the wettest and most humid), and the dry season from November to April when it’s dry and cool. However, there are also regional differences, in that the further south you go the hotter it is, and in some north-eastern areas weather can be temperamental, even in the hot season.
December is arguably the best month in Laos for all-round favourable weather. The dry and pleasant conditions are ideal for both sightseeing, and outdoor activities.
Wet Season:
The monsoon season in Laos sees the north of the country getting more rainfall than the south, and increased humidity throughout the country. Like most monsoon countries, the rain comes in short downpours that usually last no longer than a few hours. The wet weather can make travel difficult, particularly in rural areas, although rivers which were too low to navigate towards the end of the dry season become important transport routes after rain raises water levels. The wet weather also sees the parched landscape bounce back to life: rice fields turn a shade of emerald and tumbling waterfalls are surrounded by vibrant greenery.
Dry Season
The dry season offers the best time to visit Laos. November to January are the most pleasant months to travel in lowland Laos, when daytime temperatures are lovely and warm, although evenings may be slightly cool. The countryside will still be green and lush after the rains. This is perfect for trips along the Mekong River or those seeking rafting and kayaking adventures. At higher elevations temperatures are significantly cooler, sometimes dropping to freezing point. This is also a fantastic time to visit elephant camps, coffee plantations and other dry-land activities such as hiking and cycling.
Other considerations
If you are interested in festivals and culture these may also be a consideration for when is best for you to visit Laos. Because the Laos calendar is dictated by solar and lunar rhythms, the dates of festivals change from year to year but we can check that for you prior to deciding when to travel.
