laos for families
Laos is a fantastic destination for families who love the outdoors and adventure, and immersing themselves in local culture. The best family holidays strike a balance between history, temples, learning, and adventure activities, as well as taking some relaxation time. You will find all this here, from cosmopolitan cafes in Vientiane to the limestone mountains around Vang Vieng, the powerful waterways of Si Phan Don to the inexplicable but impressive ‘Plain of Jars’. You and your children will love this fascinating and friendly destination.
Below are some highlights of this lesser travelled nation:
Kong Lor: families will be captivated by these spectacular caves and children will be amazed by the impressive stalagmites and stalactites that you will see as you venture through these long caves.
Si Phan Don: a great place to relax, this area of ‘4000’ islands is beautiful, and animal lovers will delight in trying to spot the illusive irrawaddy dolphin. Once you have relaxed enough you can visit charming Don Khone, where you can hire bikes to see the wonderful Liphi waterfall.
Plain of Jars: these mysterious archaeological artifacts will fascinate children. Whilst it is not 100% known what they were for, it is clear that they were significant as there are many sites spread over hundreds of miles. Whilst in Phonsavan older children will be interested to find out about the history of the landmines in the area.
Mekong River: for a different activity, take an over night cruise down the Mekong between Luang Prabang for a chance to take in the local scenery and life.
Hilltribe treks: children will love getting into nature in the north of the country by hill trekking and taking in the mountain landscape. As well as walking, options include river cruises, exploring local waterfalls and bicycling around the area.
Luang Prabang: the whole family will be amazed by the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage town. It is a beautiful blend of French colonial buildings, temples and modern cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants. Spend some quality family time wandering the streets, or getting outside of the town for some fun adrenaline-fuelled activities.
