Arguably Indonesia’s most popular island, Bali is a diverse blend of glistening white sands, emerald-green paddy fields, ornate temples and spectacular volcanoes. You can experience local customs and traditions in the interior where you will find authentic hill towns. Other incredible experiences include climbing Mount Batur volcano to watch the sunrise, witnessing the charm of the Jatiluwih rice terraces, watching Bali's spellbinding kecak dance performed by a large troupe of men in Chedi Club at Tanah Gajah or Uluwatu Cliff Temple, and diving at Liberty wreck or Barat National Park to discover Bali’s magnificent underwater world.

The heart of numerous Hindu-Buddhist empires, Java’s culture can be experienced in the royal city of Yogyakarta. The temples here are some of the most majestic that you will see, including Borobudur, featuring the largest collection of Buddhist relief sculptures in the world. Java is beautifully situated, surrounded by volcanoes such as Mount Butak and Mount Bromo.

A UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the mystical Komodo dragon, Komodo Island makes up part of Komodo National Park along with Rinca and Padar islands. The location is teeming with wildlife, both on land and under the waves. In addition to the namesake dragon, you may encounter endemic rats, Timor deer and orange-footed scrubfowl. It is possible to snorkel or dive in the waters around the islands where you can discover whales, dolphins and dugongs, alongside exceptional corals. The best way to experience Komodo and the surrounding islands is with a local guide on a boat tour, or aboard a private yacht charter.

Lombok is a calm and peaceful island and a great alternative to Bali. You will discover spectacular beaches, fascinating indigenous culture, and fields of coffee, rice and coconut. The islands main beach resort is Senggigi, a six mile stretch of beach offering the occasional hotel or bar. For exceptional diving, the coral around the nearby Gili Islands is a veritable paradise. The challenging hike to the rim of Mount Rinjani is worth the effort, but if hiking isn’t for you, you can marvel at the splendour of the volcano wherever you are on the island.

Sumatra is a wildlife lovers paradise. Whether it’s smouldering volcanoes, lush jungles, flowing rivers or vast wilderness, it is a dream for adventurous travellers. Alongside Borneo, it is one of the last two places in the world where it is possible to see orangutans in the wild. Places to visit in Sumatra include the city of Medan and the riverside village of Bukit Lawang, the jumping off point for a guided tour to spot orangutans in the Gunung Leuser National Park. Other wildlife includes gibbons, baboons, birds, elephants and rhinos. Smaller than Bukit Lawang, Tangkahan is a great location for tubing on the pristine Bamboo River, as well as hiking into the park.
