Highlights of Cambodia
Day 1 to 3: Siem Reap
Arrive in Siem Reap and spend the rest of this day taking time to explore this lovely town and experience local life.
Spend the next two days exploring the outstanding ancient Temples of Angkor. We can arrange this to be done as a private tour, or even enhance it by having you shown around by an Angkor archaeologist. Or alternatively if you want more adventure you could hop on a bicycle and explore yourself at your own speed. Whichever method you choose you will combine the most famous spots with a few lesser-known gems.
*For a bucket list experience add on a helicopter tour which will take you flying over Siem Reap, Angkor and then further afield to Koh Ker and Beng Mealea, jungle-clad temples that are rarely seen due to their remoteness.
Day 4 to 5: Battambang
Next you will travel to Battambang, Cambodia’s second largest city. You can travel here by boat from Siem Reap for a wonderful experience taking in all the local life on the banks of the river. Once here enjoy the elegant French colonial buildings and good restaurants.
On your second day here we recommend getting into the surrounding countryside, which you can explore by bike. As it gets dark, experience thousands of bats emerge from caves at Phnom Sampeau, a truly atmospheric experience.
Day 6 to 8: Phnom Penh
En-route to Cambodia’s bustling capital city, visit the floating villages on Tonle Sap, a truly special trip. Once you have arrived in Phnom Penh immerse yourself in the busy streets by visiting the old French Quarter, the Royal Palace, the riverside and the markets loaded with fresh produce. On the outskirts of the city, a fascinating place to visit is Tuol Sleng, once a high school, and under the Khmer Rouge regime of Pol Pot a prison. The museum can be harrowing but also extremely humbling. If you are interested in this part of Cambodia’s history, another important place to visit is the memorial at the killing fields of Choeung Ek. Finish your day with an energetic dance performance by Cambodian Living Arts, which preserves the country’s artistic heritage, having been obliterated in the 1970s.
Day 9 to 11: Southern Cardamom National Park
Discovering this exceptional national park is a must for nature lovers. Your choice of activities include heading out on patrol with a wildlife ranger to spot bird species, Sun Bears and Asian Elephants. Or go crab-fishing and enjoy your catch on the barbecue. Alternatively for adventure seekers, there’s towering waterfalls, mountain biking, kayaking, and multi-day treks to ecological and cultural sites for those who are able to add some extra time to their holiday.
You can stay in eco-lodges, luxurious resorts, or local homestays.
Day 12 to 16: Koh Rong/Phnom Penh
A short ferry ride Sihanoukville on Cambodia’s coast, Koh Rong islands offer stunning beaches around a dense forest interior. You can spend your time here relaxing in pure paradise. This may be all you want to do after a busy trip, however for something a bit more active try island hopping or snorkelling trips.
